Historique :	Thomas Couture (1815-1879) connut dans l'atelier de Gros le peintre cantalien Eloy Chapsal. On trouve dans le Cantal plusieurs Oeuvres de Couture : le portrait de Chapsal (musée d'Aurillac) et les portraits de M et Mme Félix de Parrieu (château de Fabrègue). Il s'agit d'un des rares tableaux religieux de Couture, représentatif du style néo-classique du 19e siècle.
